Gina Maher Retires After 50 Historic Years

By Julia Welter

For the first time in over five decades, Irvington High School will have a new girls’ basketball coach. On September 11, Gina Maher announced to her team that she was retiring after 50 seasons, ending one of the most legendary coaching careers in New York State history.

Maher retires as the state’s all-time winningest girls’ basketball coach, with 814 victories, 18 Section 1 championships, six state titles, and five Federation crowns. She earned induction into both the New York State Basketball and Westchester County Sports Halls of Fame, along with countless career achievement awards. Her 800th win came in February 2024 against Eastchester, celebrated by an overflow home crowd.

Her influence reached beyond championships. Maher built a program centered on teamwork, resilience, and confidence. She also championed inclusivity by coaching Unified basketball, ensuring students with disabilities had meaningful opportunities in athletics.

The program’s leadership will now shift to assistant coach B.J. Constantine, who has been with the Bulldogs for 24 years but is expected to remain in her current role, leaving junior varsity coach Kaitlin Degnan as the leading candidate for head coach.

Though stepping away from varsity basketball, Maher will remain involved in the Irvington community. She plans to continue coaching girls’ tennis and Unified basketball and will be a regular presence at Bulldogs games. Her retirement marks the close of an extraordinary era, but her legacy will continue to shape Irvington athletics for years to come.
