Can’t Dine Out? Bring that Restaurant Home with You

By Rachel Musman

Remember the days when you and your family and friends could go out to a restaurant. Maybe you were celebrating a birthday or an anniversary or maybe a tough week of school. Or maybe you just didn’t feel like cooking.

After being stuck in isolation for over two months so much has changed, but one thing is constant: good food. And even though we can no longer go out to eat at our favorite restaurants, there is still a way to bring our favorite restaurants to us.

My family and I have ordered and picked up food from a handful of different Irvington-area restaurants, and each and every one went pretty smoothly.

The first restaurant my family ordered from was River City Grille, from which we ordered a large amount of food for a family member’s birthday. They have a specific menu for this situation, and many of the main courses are family sized. The food was spectacular, and there was a range of options, from pastas to chicken to salads. The only con about ordering from River City is that they don’t deliver; they have a pick up line. However, the line goes smoothly. You open your trunk and they place the food in it, while wearing a mask and gloves. The line can get long, but the food is so delicious it is worth it.

Additionally, Jimmy’s Soft Serve, an Irvington favorite, came to my neighborhood. Like River City, the process went super smoothly. Jimmy and his nephew, wearing masks and gloves, placed the cups of ice cream on the ground and then my family and I picked them up. I would recommend getting a cup instead of a cone, so you are able to maintain social distancing.

Sushi Mike’s is another restaurant my family ordered from. We placed the order around an hour ahead of time, and there was basically no wait for pick up. We did order on a Sunday night, so there is a possibility that could be different on a Friday or Saturday. The food was amazing, and made life feel slightly less strange.

Lastly, my family picked up Bibille, another Irvington favorite. We ordered ahead of time, although it is possible to go in and order take out. The food was amazing, as Bibble is used to take out, and none of the bowls had incorrect orders.

I had zero complaints about any of my experiences ordering in. Not only did it help my family and I gain a sense of normalcy, but we were able to support local businesses. The process went super smoothly, and it was easy to wipe down containers and maintain social distancing.
