Snow & COVID: the Story of Winter Track ’21

New York Armory was closed for track meets in part so it could be used as a vaccination site.

The winter track season has come and gone, in what seemed like a blink of an eye, and meets were at a premium. In fact, there were only three meets this year, thanks to a combination of COVID-19 and wintery weather.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, indoor locations like the Armory for meets were out of the question. So teams naturally turned to outdoor locations as a substitute. But even in a normal year, weather can greatly affect the winter track season and how the athletes are able to train.

The Bulldog runners have the luxury of a new beautiful track, but it was completely buried in snow all season. They were able to get two meets early in the year, hosting just one team for each for safety reasons. The team then had five meets wiped off the schedule due to the snow. While this was hard on everyone, the team kept practicing through the season.

The third and final race was held in the Palisades Mall parking garage, a unique location to be sure (click here for our story on the Palisades Parking Garage Track Meet).
