Track Team Ends Season with a Bang

By Wyatt McInerney

The Irvington winter track season ended in exciting fashion this past Monday. The Section 1 Class C Championships was a great day for the entire team, the boys all together finished 4th in the section, and the girls, 15th.

Along with the team excelling as a whole, there were a ton of individual achievements to be proud of. Ben Kasoff had a PR in the pole vault with a height of 11-07, winning the section.

Tane Kim also PR’d, bringing home 3rd in the long jump with a distance of 20-00.50.

Mason Canton finished 4th in the section in the 55m dash with a time of 6.84. Canton said, “It’s not exactly the result I wanted, but being disappointed with 4th shows my improvement this season. I’m looking forward to chasing that PR again this Sunday at the State Qualifier meet.”

Canton also finished 5th in the 300m with a PR of 38.36. Anish Joshie also added some points for Irvington, finishing 3rd in the 2 mile with a time of 10:01.

Indy Minkoff was able to finish 3rd in the section in the mile, running a time of 4:37. Matthew Jacoby hit a PR in the high jump, finishing 4th in the section with a height of 5-08. Syian Sawain finished 6th in the section in the long jump, with a PR of 14-05.

Joshua Lee finished 6th in the 55m Hurdles, followed closely behind by Aaron Schwartz coming in 8th.

Syian Sawain finished 7th in the section in the 55m hurdles, and ran a PR in prelims with an 8.05. Sophia DeCecchis finished 6th in the section for the race walk.

Luke Calabrese finished 7th in the section with a PR in the 1000m. Shaleen Thaker finished 5th in the section in the triple jump as well.

The relay teams also had exciting days, with the boys 4×200 finishing 3rd, the boys 4×400 finishing 4th, and the boys 4×800 finishing 3rd.

Translating from the immense work these athletes put in throughout this season, many other bulldogs had PR’s this day as well. This includes Haidan Wiles, Glen Fang, Matthew O’Reilly, Olivia Liu, Alexandra Lyashenko, Riley Khan, and Martina Albay.

The throwers also had a good day with Hanna Reich finishing 10th in the section, Nicola Paul finishing 12th, Hudson Failla finishing 25th, and Willem Van der Wal finishing 27th in the Shot Put.

Overall, this was a strong showing from our athletes, and the huge amount of sophomores and juniors on this team would make anyone excited for the future of Irvington track.
