Girl’s Soccer Mid-Season Check-in

By David Arango

With several significant games and outstanding performances, the Irvington girl’s soccer team has had a successful 2023 season so far. On September 1st, they began their season with a difficult battle against Edgemont. Following a scoreless regulation, Keira Nyarady scored a critical unassisted goal in overtime, securing a hard-fought victory.

On September 6, the girls played Ardsley in their second game, which they dominated for most of the match and won 3-1. The goal scorers included Niki DeNardo, Sophia Im, and Keira Nyarady, with Samara Vasishta and Keira Nyarady providing the assists. Cori Castalleano also played a fantastic game, making 6 saves.

With the team being on a hot streak they faced Croton on September 12th. They were able to achieve a comfortable win of 4-0 with a hat trick from Niki DeNardo and a goal from Addie Doing. The team displayed excellent teamwork with assists from Ruthie Liang, Keira Nyarady, and Jeneva Preval.

Two days later, they played Briarcliff, which really showed off this team’s abilities. By halftime, the score was knotted at 1-1, but Addie Dring was able to score the game-winning goal in the final minute of the second half to give her team a 2-1 victory after a tough battle. Niki DeNardo and Samara Vasishta assisted Addie on both of her goals, and Cori Castellano made three saves in the end.

Unfortunately, their next game, on September 18th, against Pleasantville, ended in a 0-0 tie that was cut short due to heavy rain.

The girls’ soccer team defeated Valhalla 7-1 on September 20 to display their abilities once more. Niki DeNardo once again scored a hat trick, adding to the two goals Allie Cloutman and Addie Dring each scored. Keira Nyarady, Addie Dring, and Aly Raimondo all contributed one assist, and Niki DeNardo contributed two.

It’s been a great year so far, and the team looks to continue their success heading into the second half of the season.
