Irvington Fencing Begins COVID-Modified Season

By Jackie Pollack

The varsity fencing season is well underway. However, this year section 1 implemented various tournament restrictions due to the pandemic.

The league is now split into two sections based on geography. Irvington is placed in the South League with Ardsley, Mamaroneck, and Woodlands. The North-West League includes Clarkstown, Nyack, Tappan Zee, Arlington, and Our Lady of Lourdes.

There will only be a league championship tournament and no sectionals. The tournaments will be held on consecutive Saturdays in a round robin format. To limit the number of players within the gym, one Saturday will be specifically for foil players, and the next Saturday will be for only epee players.

Only competing fencers will attend the tournaments. There will be a maximum of four athletes per weapon, gender, and school. Masks and social distancing will be required throughout the gym. Afterwards, the league champions will be determined from the records of these tournaments.

Unfortunately, no spectators are allowed to come to any of the tournaments, and a positive COVID test result will shut down the team for two weeks. Luckily, the team obtained new equipment for the season thanks to Mr. Buonamano.
