With Super Bowl Sunday coming up this week, many people around the country have begun to prepare for their classic traditions and parties. The game brings millions of people together, not just for the matchup on the field itself, but for everything that surrounds it. While the game features elite athletes with high tension and stakes, the Super Bowl has grown into something far bigger than just football alone. For many viewers, the final score is only one small part of the experience.
Around America, Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial national holiday. Friends and families gather together in living rooms, basements, and backyards for watch parties that often start hours before kickoff. Tables are filled with classic gameday foods including wings, nachos, pizza, etc. Even people who rarely follow the NFL tune in for the social atmosphere and shared tradition that the game brings.
When Sophomore Keaton Cole was asked about his emotions leading up to the big game, he stated, “I can’t wait for the Super Bowl. The game is going to be so entertaining, but I also am really excited to gather with my friends to celebrate.”
The halftime show is also a major attraction of the night, drawing in fans of music who may not even care about the sport at all. Featuring a major global artist, the performance turns the Super Bowl into a culture event that sparks conversations within the music community. For many viewers, halftime is the highlight of the night.
Junior Brandon Reich says, “Even though I don’t really follow the NFL that much, the Super Bowl is one of my favorite days of the year just because of how fun the experience is overall and how it brings all of us together.”
Furthermore, many people are interested in the commercials of the Super Bowl. Companies spend months and millions of dollars creating ads specifically for this night, and viewers eagerly debate which ones are the best. Social media fills with live reactions of them along with even rankings that make commercials another classic aspect of the Super Bowl.
Though the game itself determines a champion, Super Bowl Sunday has become something much larger, as it is an event that continues to bring people together year after year, no matter the final score.
