DECA is one of the many IHS’ many clubs that is available to and run by students. For those who don’t know, DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is an international student organization that prepares high school students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management through practice with real-world business experiences and leadership development opportunities. DECA also consists of competitive events that students pay a small fee to attend, where students present their ideas and work to others. Within the club, members practice skills like public speaking, problem solving, and communication through dissecting real world experiences.
Recently, some of the DECA students went on the annual Ultimate DECA Power Trip. I interviewed Mr. Cipolla, the amazing teacher who runs our Irvington DECA club. I asked him to explain what the Power Trip was about and what students took part in.
Here’s what he said:“This is the kickoff event of the DECA year that brings together DECA members from across the country. The weekend conference is designed to enhance the overall DECA experience through workshops, seminars and other networking activities. While in D.C. this year, our members learned how to be leaders both inside and out of DECA, discovered new ways to succeed in competition, and prepare for their future pathways after graduation. We were also treated to a guided nighttime tour of many of the national monuments around D.C. as a way to gain a broader perspective on our host city. Our own sophomore, Heidi Blanton, was also recognized during the closing session as one of ten students deemed an “Ultimate DECA Member” for her completion of a multi-day goosechase that required her to document and attend a multitude of conference events and activities.”
Although I didn’t go on this trip because my group, community giving, was not assigned to this trip, it seemed super interesting and like a great experience. I also think it’s fascinating that when students go on these trips, they get to meet other students from different schools, providing a great opportunity to interact with other people.
I then asked Mr. Cipolla what he is looking forward to regarding DECA club this year.
“When it comes to what I’m looking forward to within our chapter, it’s the overall continued interest and success of its members. Last year, former student Tane Kim took home first place at our international conference and his success has motivated many students, both new and returning, to achieve the same. Our club has grown tremendously since then, from 35 students three years ago to 108 this current year. Seeing students using their creative ingenuity in approaching their event topics and the joy of their triumphs are what makes being the chapter’s advisor worth every moment” he said.
