November 6th was the high school’s annual iDodge Tournament, run by the Positive Impact Club leadership team. As per usual, it was a successful event. Senior Kylie Canton explained, “the purpose of the tournament was to raise awareness about drug abuse in honor of Drug Awareness Month.” The event is meant to encourage activity and fun over the use of drugs. It utilizes the motto “Don’t Do Drugs Do Dodgeball.”
The winner of the tournament was the Blue team, a group composed mostly of junior boys, after an intense championship match between the Blue and Neon Green teams. Although I wasn’t there to see it, I’ve gotten word that it was very competitive and exciting.
Sophomore Hazel Kwon was one of the participants on the Purple team. She thought “it was really fun and everyone had so much energy. People were cheering each other on, and even though my team got out in the first round, we still stayed to support our friends!”
The tournament was organized by the Positive Impact Club Presidents: Kylie Canton, Sophia Im, Kayla Clinton and Leila Schneider. There was also lots of support and crucial help from Positive Impact Club advisors Mr. Hastings and Ms. Pulice. Staff members Ms. Hart and Mr. Razzak were also there for extra support and supervision.
Club President Kylie Canton also explained that “dodgeball was chosen since it’s a very inclusive activity that allows a lot of people to participate.” I totally agree with her. Dodgeball is a universal sport that’s relatively easy and it flows well with the motto: don’t do drugs do dodgeball.
Drug Awareness Month is so important for numerous reasons, including the fact that it raises awareness for the dangers of substance use, encourages prevention, and supports recovery. It highlights the importance of starting conversations early with younger individuals, as most substance abuse issues begin before the age of 18. It also provides a platform to remember those lost to addiction and support those in recovery.
