School To Require Students To Sign Out Before Leaving Campus

By Josh Chang

Starting after the holiday break, Juniors and Seniors who leave campus will need to sign out and in at the main entrance when they leave and arrive back. The sign out sheet, a bright yellow sheet of paper on a clipboard, will be placed at the security desk across from the Maher Gym.

The new rule is intended to help officials identify who is and is not on campus during an emergency, Ms. GM said. It has no impact on Freshmen and Sophomores, who are not allowed to leave campus during the school day.

The change in policy will be announced officially by email on Monday after break. Ms. GM acknowledged that it is likely to take some adjustment for students, especially those who are accustomed to using other exits. To maximize participation, she said it may be possible for students to sign out in advance when convenient, such as when passing the main entrance, if they know when they will leave and return.

“I understand the intention, but I’m not sure about the practicality,” said Senior Samantha Levin, who leaves campus almost every day, “Maybe a Google Form would be a better option.”

One student, who asked not to be named, said they would “definitely ignore” the sign out sheet.
