National Championship recap: ‘Bama Wins Again

By Alex Schochet

The College Football National Championship game was played on January 11 between the University of Alabama and Ohio State University. Alabama won the National Championship in convincing fashion yet again, 52-24. This was Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban’s seventh National Championship.

It was a matchup of the usual heavyweights of college football, and the game went how you would have expected if you had watched college football for the past decade.

Alabama was led by Heisman winner Devonta Smith and Heisman finalists Mac Jones and Najee Harris. Alabama got to the National Championship game by beating fourth ranked Notre Dame in the semi-final in a blow out of 31-14. This was Alabama’s fifth time in the National Championship game.

Ohio State got to the national championship game beating Clemson in an upset 49-28. This was an interesting matchup because many people expected Clemson to win. And in the fashion that Ohio State won, people wondered if they would be able to keep it close and maybe even win versus Alabama.

Ohio State was led by Justin Fields, a top recruit three years ago, and transfer from Georgia. Fields had a great game against Clemson leading them to the game against Alabama.

Ohio State was able to keep it close between the two teams, but then Alabama unleashed Heisman winner Devonta Smith who in the first half had three touchdowns on 12 receptions and an amazing 215 yards.

Alabama led 35-17 at halftime, and while Smith got injured at the start of the second half, Alabama’s lead was so huge it didn’t matter, and shows just how dominant Alabama has been in college football the past decade.
