The Irvington Bulldogs Varsity soccer team put together a memorable season, establishing itself as one of the strongest programs in Section 1. After capturing the league title and earthing the number two seed in Section 1 Class B playoffs,  the Bulldogs advanced to the semi-finals before their postseason run came to a heartbreaking end with a 2-0 loss to Pleasantville.

One of the biggest factors behind Irvington’s success was the team’s growing chemistry. As the season progressed, players became increasingly comfortable playing alongside one another, developing the communication and trust necessary to compete at a high level.

“The biggest improvement this season was definitely our ability to play together. Our chemistry improved more and more as the season went on, and our communication was key,” said junior Hagai Frechter.

That chemistry extended beyond the field. Players described the team as more than just a collection of individuals, emphasizing the close relationships that helped define the season.

“I would describe the chemistry of the group as something similar to a big family. It felt bigger than just a group of players, and that’s what led to so much of the team’s success,” said junior George Miles.

The Bulldogs also demonstrated resilience throughout their postseason campaign. Despite missing Joseph DeNardo to a suspension, and Dennis Sasso to an injury in their first-round matchup, the team managed to push through and secure a 1-0 victory against Bronxville.

After the 1-0 game against Bronxville, Sports Editor Henry Muzzy held a post game interview with assistant coach Brendan O’Sullivan.

“What was your one key to victory today?”

“Playing together, togetherness. In the first half, I think we played with a lot of nerves and jitteriness which is normal for a playoff game. Having the 1st round bye, we haven’t had a competitive game in well over a week, and I think that hurt us a little bit in the 1st half. Once we settled in for the game, the second half, we made some adjustments. That’s when we really were playing soccer, like how we play the game.”

“What’s your game plan moving forward as you go into later rounds of the playoffs?”

“We’re gonna keep playing our game. Our game is playing fast, playing together, switching the ball, left side, right side, all over. Finding our pivot players, just looking to play the ball fast. That’s our game, that’s our style. That’s how we’re always gonna play. No big adjustments, really.”

Beyond the team’s chemistry and resilience, the season represented a significant accomplishment for the Irvington soccer program. The Bulldogs captured the league title, defeated several formidable opponents, including teams from higher classifications like AA team Eastchester, and reached the Section 1 semifinals.

“This year’s team made waves through the section as we accomplished things the program has not seen in years,” said sophomore Eli Sirulnik. “This year’s team built a name for Irvington soccer as one to be feared, like never before.”

Although the Bulldogs fell short of reaching the sectional championship, their accomplishments established a new standard for the program. The team’s success, close-knit relationships, and determination made this season one to remember for Irvington soccer.
