Captains Corner: Glen Feng

by Lacey Zuckerman

Last week, the Irvington Boys Cross Country Team and Girls Cross Country Team were victorious at leagues. Both teams feature star runners and leaders, including Senior captain Glen Feng.

Mr. Williams, one of the coaches of the team, described Glen as “an amazing teammate and leader.”

Glen has been a member of the team since 9th grade and has grown exponentially since the start of his career.

When asked what allowed him to improve, Glen said, “running with a lot of older athletes when I was a freshman and sophomore.”

Mr. Williams said, “He practices like he competes. I think his attitude and training has been influenced by those who have come before him. He kind of attached himself to them and took on the same work ethic. He’s a joy to coach; I wish we had like 15 of him, and he’s a terrific runner. He is a quiet leader; he leads by example, but when he needs to step in and set the tone, he does so.”

The league championship is just the start for the Bulldogs. Sectionals and states are still very much in reach.

Glen said, “Our goal is to get used to running with one another.”

After losing many seniors who graduated last year, Mr. Williams said, “We’re really excited about what this team can do, despite losing 9 of our top ten runners.”

The team has been boosted by consistently strong senior leadership. Lily Korb and Melanie Welsch are two examples.  Lily, one of the girls’ senior team captains, used to play soccer and switched to cross country.

Coach Williams said, “She’s really provided a lift, and she’s one of our top runners”.

Melanie, a freshman transfer student from Ohio, finished as the top girl for Irvington at the Rivertowns Cup in her very first Varsity race.
