Irvington Senior Creates Art Group to Promote Change

Maddie Green couldn’t just stand by when she saw the atrocities happening in our country, such as the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. She decided to blend her passion of art and desire to create a change by making her group, Art For Survival.

After the shooting in Parkland, Green says she “felt an immense responsibility to do something and create change.” Thinking of how to do this, it became obvious to her that art would be a powerful and effective way to voice her opinion. So she started an organization called Art for Survival (http://artforsurvival.com/).

Art For Survival aims “to create a safer world” by making people “more aware of how prevalent gun violence is.” Green feels gun violence is becoming a norm in America and she wants that to change.

She doesn’t want this debate to be partisan although she feels that it is because some feel that gun control will take people’s guns away. She says she is not in favor of that. “I just want everyone to be safe,” she says.

The way the organization works is she asks young adults to create art which delivers a message about gun violence and then she will curate them based on skill, and eventually display them on buildings through projected images.

Green wants to put these artworks on buildings all over the country with projectors that will make the art highly visible. She is currently looking for money so that she can fund these goals by purchasing projectors. The link for the GoFundMe is https://www.gofundme.com/artforsurvival.

Currently, Green is looking for more young artists who feel passionate about this issue to create and send in art. She is receiving art from states all over the country and wants others to use this platform to “to voice their opinions about this.”

Green has high hopes for this project and is already looking forward to the next few months when she plans to create events and begin projecting the art.
