Ackerman, Yun named to All-State Music Festival

By Jackie Pollack

Congratulations to seniors Chaeil (Robert) Yun and Richard Ackerman, who have attained a spot in the distinguished New York State School Music Association’s All-State Festival. Both students have been playing the viola for eight years and have awaited this moment.

Due to COVID-19, the December winter conference was cancelled, and the ensemble performances will be held virtually. They are both eager to play Tchaikovsky’s “Marche Slave.”

In an interview, I asked both Yun and Ackerman what this accomplishment means to them.

Yun said, “As my second year participating in the NYSSMA All-States, I feel honored to represent the school with Richard. For me, it’s another moment of growth and a stepping stone for my passion for music.”

Ackerman, who also composed the music for The Paw Print’s PawCast, said, “It means a lot to me to have the privilege of playing with people from all over the state. When I did it last year, I made new friends and reconnected with old ones. Orchestra performance is a social experience just as much as it is a musical one and a great opportunity to make connections. I look forward to doing it again this year!”

Both are going to continue playing in college as either a hobby or possibly a double-major or minor. Not surprisingly, Yun and Ackerman are a part of the IHS orchestra.

Ackerman said, “I joined the school orchestra in 5th grade, and had the privilege of working under Mr. Goldberg for 6 years. While I didn’t take lessons from him as I took private lessons, I have never met a more dedicated teacher than him. I have so much respect for his philosophy of teaching and his love for what he did. It was very hard to say goodbye when he retired.”

Yun said, “I would like to thank my orchestra teacher, Mr. Calvaresi, for his constant support.”
