‘Emily in Paris’ — a Fun and Light Series to Binge

By Elise Harcsar

Need an escape? Netflix’s new “Emily in Paris” provides a change in scenery, exploring the culture and couture of Paris.

Starring Lily Collins, Emily Cooper from Chicago moves to Paris in the hopes of a fresh start with her new job as a marketing executive for a high-end fashion company — Savoir. Unprepared (she can’t speak French) and facing high expectations set by her harsh boss and clients, Emily faces many challenges both in her work and social life.

Emily creates new friendships and relationships and eventually gets entangled in a love triangle. She struggles to stay loyal to her best friend while needing to prove that she is worthy of her job and can handle the hard work.

Among the chaos and stress, Emily manages to find pockets of happiness within the lavish food and scenery offered by Paris.

Emily’s intention to blend American and Parisian culture in a clothing line for Savoir is viewed as a problem and offensive for many Parisians. Emily’s cultural ignorance and the stereotypes presented in the Netflix series has been criticized for its unrealistic representation of Paris.

Although the series was very cliche and had many stereotypical aspects, it didn’t have any intention to mock Parisian culture. It is meant to be unrealistic and provides a carefree and adventurous twist on Paris.

This is a fun series if you are interested in learning about the scenery and food of Paris. It is something quick to binge when needing something light and happy to watch.
