Perhaps unsurprisingly, the results of the 2020 Irvington High School mock election show that students favor Former Vice President Joe Biden over President Donald Trump by a vast margin. In the student political survey, respondents largely identified as liberals/Democrats and expressed support for progressive policies. The most important issue to students was the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mock Election Results
In total, 306 students participated in the mock election, representing just under 60% of the school. Of those who voted, 89% preferred Joe Biden to be America’s next president; 11% disagreed, selecting Donald Trump instead. The margin of error of the mock election over the 95% confidence interval was ±2.2%.
In 2016 election, the nine precincts that make up the Irvington School District jurisdiction voted for Clinton 74%-26%. There are a number of possible explanations for the fairly large gap between the results of the mock election and the 2016 results. One is that people could have changed their minds; the national environment has shifted towards Democrats since 2016 so our school might be no different. Another explanation could be kids holding different opinions from their parents, a situation 9% of survey respondents claimed to be in. A final explanation could be the voting patterns of adults without high school kids in these precincts. Nevertheless, it should be interesting to compare the mock election to the precinct results from tomorrow’s contest.
