Irvington mourns Ms. Rodriguez, ‘a beautiful soul’

The Irvington school and community mourned the passing of recently retired guidance counselor Ms. Claudia Rodriguez on April 3.

“A beautiful soul, Claudia’s jolly laugh was certainly one that filled our days with immense joy,” special education teacher Ms. Carleen Julian wrote in an email to staff. “The kids that swarmed her office for a deep breath and a safe space…those who went to get life advice… and those who simply went to share her joy — every kid that crossed her path is better because of her.”

Ms. Julian continued, “As a colleague, Claudia dropped everything to help. Need to discuss a student’s poor performance? Balance a class? Ask about a family? Vent about something? Laugh about something else? Claudia’s door was always open.”

“Claudia will be in our hearts forever.”

In a letter to the school and community, superintendent Dr. Kris Harrison said, “Mrs. Rodriguez was a talented counselor and passionate individual who impacted the lives of thousands of students. Thanks to her commitment to her students, many of their lives are forever better as a result of her support, guidance and encouragement.”

He continued, “She was also a revered member of the Irvington faculty. Due to her collegiality and friendship, we are a stronger professional community today.”

Due to the continuing health crisis, details about memorial services have not been released. Expressions of condolences can be sent to 2 Roseland Court, New City NY 10956. The Irvington community’s thoughts and prayers are with her husband Jose and sons, Joe and Matthew.
