Senior, Remy Mermelstein has won the grand prize at the Westchester Science and Engineering Fair and will now advance to compete in the International Sustainable World Project Olympiad in Houston, Texas.
Mermelstein has put in many hours of hard work and it paid off. Mermelstein competed against over 570 students from Westchester and Putnam counties. He won the American Meteorological Society Award. Mermelstein also won third place in the Earth Science category.
“It is the next and final step in the Science Research program for me, the ISWEEEP International Competition. It is amazing to have gotten the award, and I cannot wait to share my research with others in Houston come May,” said award winner, Remy Mermelstein.
The competition is international, bringing over 700 students from 70 countries. Mermelstein’s research is titled “The Effects of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multi-Decadal Oscillation on U.S. Regional Sensible Weather.”
Mermelstein will attend Cornell University in the fall. Mermelstein will study architecture, has had a hug interest in weather since a young age and has been making weather predictions since the ninth grade.
When asked about his Weather career, Mermelstein responded, “It started when I was very little, and it has taught me more than I could have ever imagined about our earth and its systems. I use everything I learn to provide forecasts on my website www.weatherinthehud.com and some of my research is displayed there as well.”
Mermelstein’s website was made to provide detailed forecasts that are specific to Irvington and the Hudson Valley region. WeatherInTheHud.com, was voted as the best local website by Westchester Magazine’s “Best of Westchester” list for 2016.
