On March 7th, Bulldogs Beat Cancer hosted a 3v3 basketball tournament to raise money for blood cancer patients and their families.
Sophomores Ally Nghiem and Isabelle O’Reilly are team leaders for the organization Blood Cancer United.
Isabelle said, “We are in a competition between high schoolers to raise the most money for different types of blood cancer.”
Blood Cancer United is a nonprofit organization that has the goals of curing blood cancer and improving patient lives. It was created in 1949, and it provides advocacy, support services, and funding for patients with lymphoma, leukemia, myeloma, and other blood related conditions.
Ally and Isabelle invited the Honored Hero of our region, Jacob, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at 6 years old, along with his brother and mother. The tournament included eight teams competing in a double elimination tournament. The opening game was a 4v4, where Jacob and his little brother Jonah picked who would be on their team and who they would play against. Jacob and Jonah’s team won, with help from Sophomore Jake Piersol and Junior Joseph DeNardo. Then, the tournament began. There were 2 games going on at a time, each about 10 minutes long. Hagai Frechter, Jake Piersol, and Jarrett Ourman won the championship. They each received a medal and a DoorDash gift card.
In total, over 600$ was raised for the event.
