Inflation is Getting Out of Hand: $180 Burger at the Super Bowl

By George Miles

A ticket to the Super Bowl is not a luxury everyone can afford. Between the price of a flight, hotel rooms, and even the ticket itself, fans are already spending thousands just to get into the stadium. And that is before they even think about food. Especially this year, concession prices reached a whole new level, leaving many fans shocked at what they were paying just to grab a simple bite between quarters.

This year’s Super Bowl showcased a staggering $180 burger. The burger featured braised bone-in beef shank, roasted mirepoix demi-glace, and Point Reyes blue cheese fondue, all served on a house-baked brioche bun. It sounds gourmet, sure, but $180 for a single burger feels extreme. Another surprising menu item was the “Potchachos.” This twist on classic nachos included hand-cut Kennebec potato chips topped with Dungeness crab and Petaluma white cheddar fondue sauce, setting fans back $40. And if that was not enough, the Gilroy Garlic Steak Frites cost $35 for hand-cut fries drizzled with steak sauce, topped with steak slivers and pepperoni.

Luka Surguladze, a superstar on the Legends Hockey team, reacted to the $180 burger by saying, “That’s crazy, man. What’s that burger made of? Gold? I mean, it looks good for a burger, but it’s not a $180 burger.” His reaction reflects what many fans were thinking as they stared at the menu boards in disbelief.

The game itself did not help justify the prices. For most of the night, the Super Bowl felt slow and predictable, only truly coming alive in the fourth quarter when the big plays and touchdowns finally started happening. While the ending brought some excitement, the earlier lack of action combined with jaw-dropping concession prices left many fans feeling underwhelmed with their experience.  Reflecting on this , senior Ben Weiss said “When you are paying premium prices for both the ticket and the food, you expect a premium experience; and with those super expensive meals I can confidently say I was happy watching the game at my house getting to double dip in my cheap nacho cheese dip.” And in conclusion this year, for many, it simply did not deliver.
