A new vending machine has been added to the Student Academic Commons, giving students another option for food during the school day.
The addition comes as the school prepares for a schedule change next year, where all students will share the same lunch period. With the new policy that all IHS students will have lunch during the same period, the vending machine is intended to help spread people out and reduce crowding in the cafeteria.
The machine has pre-made meals that allow students to grab and go. There are turkey sandwich meals with apple juice and apple slices, caesar salads with chicken cutlet on top, and sunbutter and jelly sandwiches with juice and apple slices. In addition to the meals, the machine has snacks including pita chips, pirate booty, and cliff bars.
All of the prices in the machine mimic the prices you would see in the cafeteria.
Student opinions on the new vending machines have so far been mixed. Some students like having a quicker option instead of waiting in long lines, while others students aren’t satisfied with the options that the machine offers.
Dario Gryka said, “I think it’s a great addition. The turkey and mayo sandwich is actually really solid and helps me get through the day.”
However, another IHS student Max Bergmann said, “If they want to rake in some real bread, they have to add better options.”
Overall, the machine is a good idea especially with how crowded lunch is going to get. The success of the machine really comes down to the food. Students believe that if they step up the food options, students will be more intrigued by the machine. If the food options remain the same, it is possible that the machine will not get used.
