School or Club Soccer?

by George Miles

In the world of high school soccer, students have to juggle between club and school soccer. Although they operate in the same sport, the two categories function as entirely different genres.

Club soccer is considered by many to be a more competitive sport. With its year-round training and regular travel to high-stakes tournaments, it can create a more competitive environment. Surrounded by an intense schedule, students may have trouble maintaining a balance between school and practice.

Junior Karsten Yamamoto, who plays for White Plains Academy, said, “I play club soccer to get better during the winter.”

School soccer is more localized. With loud crowds, rivalries, local support, and tons of energy from the student body, playing for the school team can be very exciting. Homecoming is many players’ favorite time to play for their high school. Under the lights, the packed stands watch as you face a rival. Club soccer does not have this type of atmosphere.

Hagai Fretcher, a Sophomore, “I thought high school this year was super fun. The captains did a great job to make everyone feel like they belonged”.

Club soccer is often played during the offseason of school soccer, allowing soccer players to enjoy the sport year round. Students who play soccer tend to engage in both categories, meaning they get a full perspective on the different advantages or disadvantages.
