One of the most popular sports in Irvington is winter track. Boasting about fifty members, the team has tons of passionate and confident runners.
For winter track, teams compete at indoor meets on a smaller 200m track. They participate in standard track and field events. The main goals of the season are to improve endurance, speed, strength, and race strategy. It also provides an opportunity for athletes of other sports to train and stay conditioned. The program helps runners build mileage and a strong physical foundation for the more intense spring season.
Sophomore DJ Ufer said, “I think winter track is a fantastic opportunity. It’s a great way to build up speed and power.”
The winter track team is coached by Mr. Williams, who was an assistant for the sectional-winnning boys cross country team that finished second in the state championship this year. Continuing from that strong cross country team in winter track are senior Ethan Gartlan and senior Declan Lyons. Senior Kylie Canton is the girls team captain and is poised for a terrific season, alongside junior Ruthie Liang. The assistant coaches for winter track are Mike McQuillan and Antionette Watkins.
Sophomore Emmett Ansari said, “I am excited to watch the seniors and the team dominate in this upcoming season. I also want to learn from their dedication and resilience.”
The team competes in their first match on December 7th. They will compete at the Armory in New York City for an exciting start to the season.
