This year, one of the new clubs at IHS is the Pickleball Club. At the club fair, they attracted over 30 members, showing the sport’s popularity and potential.
Pickleball, a sport that combines parts of tennis, pingpong, and badminton has exploded in popularity these past few years. It’s easy to learn, fun for beginners, and isn’t too easy where it’s boring. The game is played with paddles and a ball similar to a wiffle ball, while also being played on relatively small courts. Because of that, it’s perfect for competitive people and people who want to hangout.
The club meets regularly on club days in the gymnasium. Where students can play casual games, learn the rules and pick up new skills. For many, it may be a way to socialize and learn a fun sport, while having a great time in a low pressure environment. There will likely be a good mix of players, some competitive and some who just started. The atmosphere is planned to be relaxed and there will definitely be people willing to teach you how to play.
Sophomore Dario Gryka said “It’s easy to get into, even if you’ve never played before.”
Many students say they joined because they were looking for something new and fun to do after school, something other than going to town and getting food. With interest in pickleball growing, the club is one way to join in the sport. The pickleball club has drawn attention across all of the high school grades.
The club is led by Ben Epple and Brandon Reich, and the club’s advisor is Mr. O’Sullivan. They are still waiting for full approval but are hoping to start as soon .
