Irvington’s homecoming week creates a festive atmosphere among both students and athletes. With wacky dress up days and exciting sporting events, the week is always enjoyable and fun. Homecoming is when the stands are packed, creating some of the most meaningful athletic moments and matches.
The Irvington Girls Soccer team got a huge win on their weekend homecoming game. Throughout the game, everybody played their own part, each contributing to the Bulldog’s success every game. The pivotal moment of the game was the game winning goal from Federica Ricciardella. The stunning strike propelled the Bulldogs to a win.
When asked about the game and the team Sophomore Alex Im said, “I love this team and cannot wait to see how far we get in Sectionals”.
Meanwhile, pure domination was the story of the homecoming game for the Irvington Boys Soccer Team, defeating the Scarsdale B Team 8-1. The star of the game was Griffin Warner, who had a hat trick.
When Warner was asked about his performance, he said he “couldn’t have asked for a better night and it was a full team effort, glad we got the job done for our fans.”
Joseph DeNardo, Dennis Sasso, and Emmanuel Bakopoulos found the back of the net as well in the win. The boys continued their red hot season, improving to 5-0-1.
On Saturday, it was time for the cross country squad to shine, as they won their homecoming meet.
Sophomore Sawyer Stein said, “I think we did amazing and had a great team effort. We swept the meet and had a good pact up front to lead the team to victory. I hope to see us go far”
The success was also very enjoyable from the spectator side of things. Freshman KJ Mastropietro, who was in attendance said, “It was a very fun meet to watch and I think they have a lot of potential.”
On Tuesday September 16, the Irvington swim team won its homecoming game against John Jay-North Salem.
After many events and a hard fought day, Irvington won by a score of 90-78. The Bulldogs competed in multiple races such as the 200 Medley Relay, 50 free relay and the 100 fly.
The swim team was very happy after the win. Especially the seniors that competed in it. “It was really fun for me, especially since it’s my last year here” said Senior Leah Brandstaedter after being asked how it felt to win homecoming for the Bulldogs.
It was a really great day for the Irvington swim team and it was a well deserved win.
On Saturday September 21, the Irvington Bulldogs football team hosted the Edgemont/Blindbrook Panthers on Mezaros Field for the final game of homecoming week.
The Bulldogs won in a blowout victory by a score of 40-22. Contributions were made from a lot of players both offensively and defensively to contribute to this great win.
Players who scored were Senior Soren DeYonker who scored two rushing touchdowns, Senior Brody Schimmel with one rushing touchdown, Junior Zachary Surchin with one rushing touchdown, Senior Riley Hein with a receiving touchdown from Senior Chris Callahan, and Senior Danny Nyarady with a receiving touchdown from Freshman Julian Peres.
The team was ecstatic after the win. When asked how it felt to win homecoming for his school, Senior Riley Hein, “It felt great to be part of an overall solid team performance”
The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 after the victory.
Near Memorial Park, the Irvington Girls Tennis Team took to the courts in an attempt to lead another successful season. On the night of September 15th, for their homecoming game, they faced a tough Byram Hills team. Decked out in all pink, the student section created a raucous atmosphere. However, unfortunately, the team was unable to find much success and win their matchup.
When asked to comment on the competition, Junior Anya Foley said “I am very disappointed in the loss today but think we can build off this and get better as they are one of the better teams in the league.”
Hopefully, this loss will not impact the rest of their season with plenty of matches still to go.
The Irvington Field Hockey team was another point of success in the triumphant homecoming week, delivering a 2-1 victory. The end result of a low-scoring battle was caused by the Bulldogs’ precise passing and tight defense, allowing them to control the game.
When asked to describe the atmosphere of the game, sophomore starter Peyton Clinton said, “It felt amazing to be back on the field with my friends, playing the sport I love. This game was a tough fight, but we pushed through.”
Finally, The Irvington Volleyball Team sent the home crowd home happy with a crucial 3-1 victory, battling through momentum swings in front of an electric crowd. The Bulldogs jumped to an early lead in the first set, before scraping out a win in the second. Needing to win just one more set, Irvington was unable to win the third, with a fourth set being forced. With the wheels churning against them, a gritty, 25-23 victory clinched the win. The Bulldogs’ energy and teamwork made the victory one to remember.
Overall, the majority of our school’s teams struck gold during homecoming. Seven out of eight teams were victorious, and most teams saw high numbers in terms of attendance.
