The MTV Video Music Awards, or VMAs, were hosted on “September 7th by “LL Cool J.” Celebrities including Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Lady Gaga, Sombr, and many more were in attendance. Celebrities dressed up, danced, sang, won and lost awards.
Dominating the nominations was the famous pop-singer Lady Gaga, who was nominated 12 times and won 4 awards. Most notably, she won “Artist of the Year.” On the main stage, she also performed a routine of “Abracadabra” and her newest song, “Dead Dance.” Although she briefly stepped in to accept her award, Lady Gaga then left for her New York show of her Mayhem Ball tour. Her VMA performances were pre-recorded.
During the Pre-Show performance, the emerging global girl group KATSEYE performed two of their hit songs, “Gabriela” and “Gnarly”. KATSEYE later won Push Performance of the Year for their song “Touch”. “Push” highlights new artists in the performance industry.
Rapper Doja Cat and saxophonist Kenny G took to the main stage to perform Doja Cat’s new song, “Jealous Type”. Earlier that night, Doja Cat took a bite out of her red lipstick on the red carpet and ate it, causing a scene on social media.
“I think that Doja Cat doing that is not out of the ordinary because she has done some ‘weird things’ in the past,” says Mackenzie Lee, a Sophomore at IHS.
Busta Rhymes performed “Break Ya Neck” for the main show and won the Rock the Bells Visionary Award. This award was recently created in 2025, and was given to Busta Rhymes for his boundary-pushing contribution to hip-hop.
Sabrina Carpenter won Best Album for her album Short n’ Sweet and performed her new song “Tears” on the main stage. Her performance featured rain pouring down on her as she crawled out of a manhole.
A newcomer to the scene, alternative artist, Sombr, performed his hit songs “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12” on the main stage. In addition to performing, Sombr won Best Alternative for “Back to Friends”.
Doechii, a new Hip-Hop artist, won Best Hip-Hop for her song “Anxiety.” She also won Best Choreography for the same music video. In total, she was nominated 4 times and won twice.
