In April 2023, Warner Brothers announced a new Harry Potter series that would rehash not just the famous story of the young wizard, but employ a whole new cast of actors to play the various roles. Unlike the widely beloved 7 original movies of the 2000s, this new series will instead be an ongoing television show, divided up into shorter episodes.
Rebooting popular franchises with entirely new casts has been a common practice for decades, with one of the most famous examples being the revival of the struggling Batman and Robin movie series with the release of Batman Begins in 2005. However, that movie proved that a successful reboot needs to stand out in comparison to the original, therefore proving that remakes can have merit. However, many, including the upcoming Harry Potter series, are simply seen as pointless cashgrabs that end up flopping in the box office.
The series’ trailer dropped on September 2, 2026, causing upset among Wizarding World purists. The trailer features a table with plastic cups and lunch trays that diminish the magic of the original Hogwarts table. Furthermore, fans point out that the new set designs have a more temporary, artificial feel, in contrast to the original castle that felt homey and inviting.
The consensus amongst critics and fans of the Harry Potter stories varies widely. Some aren’t convinced that the reboot is necessary, whilst others are excited to see a fresh new take on a precious franchise. Erik Kain at Forbes magazine said, “It is true that the Harry Potter series has already been frequently exploited for as much capital gain as possible, with various merchandise such as funko pops, or video games such as Hogwarts legacy, there has been no shortage, and perhaps even too great a quantity of harry potter products in recent years, with many seeing this new series as nothing more than the latest cash grab. And it is important to ask, if this series will be based off of the exact same source material as the original movies, how distinct will it actually be?” In contrast, many fans of the movies look forward to the series’ release. “I’m excited for the new series – I’m curious to see how it’ll compare to the originals,” said Clara Stern, a senior at IHS.
There simply isn’t enough about this show that is publicly known to make any proper assessment on its validity as both a well made piece of media and a faithful adaptation of the critically acclaimed original books by JK Rowling, but people have varying opinions on the upcoming series.
