From Irvington to the NYS Supreme Court: Desmond Lyons’ Next Step

By George Miles

In August of 2025, Desmond C.B. Lyons, who is currently a judge in the Village of Irvington, has been selected by the Democratic Party to run for the New York State Supreme Court in the 9th Judicial District this November. Lyons had been a judge prior for about 15 years and worked as a lawyer for 30 years.

There are four open seats on the court this year. Lyons is one of four Democrats running against four Republicans. Typically, Democrats have won all the seats in this area so Lyons has a very likely chance of being elected.

If he wins, which is likely, Lyons would serve for 14 years. The State Supreme Court of New York handles serious civil and criminal cases at the trial level. Lyons says he wants to focus on several aspects such as fairness, integrity, as well as ensuring people access to justice. The election will take place in November, and Lyons will appear on Row A of the ballot. Until then, he and all the other candidates will continue campaigning in order to get support from voters.

Let’s hear what some of our fellow Irvington peers think about Lyons and his opportunity to be a member of the New York Supreme Court. When Sophomore Bobby Estrada was asked what he thought about someone from our area running for the Supreme Court, he responded, “I think it’s good to see someone local in that position. It makes me feel like he understands the community better.”

Sophomore Hagai Fretcher was asked what he thought about Lyons running to have a 14 year position, and if that makes his election more important: “Yes, I think it matters a lot because he’ll be shaping decisions for a long time. However, wins need to be responsible and fair since they’ll have that role for 14 years.”

On behalf of the Irvington High School students, we wish Desmond Lyons the best of luck in his campaigning and election for this significant role.
