On November 15th, Mike Tyson, a former boxing champion, had an intense battle with Youtuber Jake Paul. The fight was the source of lots of controversy and debate. The bout drew millions of viewers and trended on social media for days, but students at IHS are questioning whether the fight’s outcome was genuine, or just a scripted fight Netflix built up by marketing.
Several students support the notion that the fight was just a facade. “There’s no way that fight wasn’t scripted,” argued Kai Johnston(11), reasoning, “Netflix probably wanted drama to keep people talking about it. Tyson looked like he was holding back and not moving much.” The skepticism from the fight is echoed by many, who often point to Paul’s history of creating headline-grabbing fights, with clear advantages for himself to promote its brand.
In my analysis of the match, the fight was more advantageous to Paul’s corner. Netflix, through marketing and promoting the fight, attempted to make it seem that either side could’ve won. In reality, Tyson’s health and age were major factors impacting his performance heavily, making him a shadow of his past self.
Many argue that Tyson, with his long history in the sport, could not ruin his reputation by losing or trying to lose in a fight. Whether the fight was staged or not, the Tyson vs. Paul fight has undeniably sparked a heated discussion.
