20-year-old, American singer and dancer, Jojo Siwa has completely rebranded and recently released a new song named Karma. Siwa used to be an inspiration for younger girls starting with her role in the show, “Dance Moms”, followed by her career in singing. She was also a face for many brands including the very well-known store for younger girls, Justice. Barbie also created a Jojo Siwa Barbie doll.
From songs like “Boomerang”, “Hold the Drama” and “Kid in a Candy Store,” intended for younger audiences, her new song has completely shifted her intended audience as it includes what people describe as “violence” and people claim that it is PG-13. Karma is quite literally the opposite of her old songs. Jojo Siwa in the “Now” podcast explains that she was “very afraid of the lyrics of Karma” and she “wasn’t ready to say” she “was a bad girl.” Despite this, she knew that this song was special and she “wanted it.” Two years later she released the song along with the music video.
Many people are conflicted about this switch-up, like Junior, and Alex Shapiro. Shapiro describes this transformation as “controversial, unique and distasteful” and is most definitely not a fan of this change. In a recent interview with Billboard Siwa says “No one has made this dramatic of a change yet. No one has made, in my generation, this extreme of a switch and I am the first of the generation. It’s very scary but someone’s gotta do it!”
