For the first time in over 50 years, NASA will be sending humans to the moon. Around late 2024, NASA will send Artemis II on its path for the moon. It will hold four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hanson. Hanson, part of the Canadian Space Agency, will be the first non-American traveling to the moon. Glover will be the first African American, and Koch will be the first woman.
However, NASA does not plan to land on the moon. Instead, they intend to have the aircraft orbit the moon for just over a week while the astronauts explore the south side. The goal is to understand and test how capable humans are of exploring deep space and is a follow-up to Artemis I, which held no living beings.
Depending on the positioning of the moon, this could potentially be the furthest humans have ever traveled into space.
NASA is currently planning to have a moon landing occur after the Artemis II Mission, on the Artemis III, however that may not be until 2025 or even 2026. After Artemis III, NASA aims to have annual launches, with hopes of reaching Mars one day.
