This past week, Irvington unveiled the brand-new entrance to the high school building, following a months-long renovation project. The new entrance features tighter security measures, such as two buzzers for entering and locked doors.
The new entrance replaces the old entrance through the Maher Gym building, which had no such security measures and usually had open doors. The doors to this entrance are now locked from the outside. The new doors are open for students to enter up until about 8:00 AM, when they are automatically locked. Anyone who enters the school later than that will have to get buzzed into school by the security guard.
This is just one of many major construction projects that have taken place at IHS this school year, following the changes in the parking lot and the renovation of part of the track as a result of a fire. This latest change, however, seems to have been put in place for security purposes in an effort to make IHS a safer place for its students.
It has proven somewhat controversial amongst Irvington students, however. “I think it’s a little too inconvenient, especially coming from the senior lot,” senior Ryan Liu told The Paw Print. “I understand the security reasons for it, but I wish there was another closer entry we can use.”
Fellow senior Hudson Svigals echoed these sentiments. “I understand that putting everyone at one entrance is good for security, but it’s such an inconvenience to change the location,” he said. “They should have updated the Maher Gym entrance, [or used the money to] renovate the student lot or fitness center instead.”
