The 2026 New York Mets are stuck in a historic breakdown that has turned their season into a “New York Mess”. The meltdown started in April, as the Mets lost 12 games in a row. In professional baseball, this is catastrophic for the team, as a losing streak this severe is almost impossible to recover from.
In the history of Major League Baseball, no team has ever made the playoffs after losing 12 games in a row. As of May 1st, this slump has led the record of the Mets to be 10-21. In the present day, this is currently the worst record in the entire league, currently behind a three way tie between the Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Kansas City Royals with a record of 12-20.
Noah Stein, a sophomore at Irvington High School who supports the Mets, said, “This team is the worst team they have put out in years. There is no heart, and there is no spirit.”
A significant reason for their poor record is the -35 run differential, which means they have given up 35 more runs than they have scored in the season. During this streak, the offense only averaged 1.4 runs per game, and the pitchers were struggling.
Additionally, injuries to star players have played a large part in how the mets have been playing. For example, Fransicisco Lindor and Juan Soto, two important figures on the team, are out due to injuries. Furthermore, even though the manager, Carlos Mendoza, is still managing, the fans are very frustrated with how the Mets are turning out.
While they have started to turn it around in May, including winning the Subway Series against the Yankees, the early struggles are cause for much concern.
