“Project Hail Mary” is an Astronomical Success

By Abigail Brandwein

On March 20th, 2026, Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling was released into theaters. The sci-fi adaptation is based on the novel by Andy Weir – a notable author who also wrote the Martian. The film follows astronaut Ryland Grace in his last-ditch mission to save the Earth from a massive environmental threat.

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the movie grossed over 510 million dollars in the box office as of April 12th, solidifying its title as a smash hit for Amazon. Furthermore, Project Hail Mary had a record-breaking global theater debut of 141 million dollars, making it Amazon’s highest grossing film of all time and surpassing Creed III.

While the premise of the film may sound familiar, Project Hail Mary distinguishes itself through a plot that revolves around problem-solving and worldliness. Instead of relying solely on spectacle – despite incredible visuals – the story celebrates intelligence, persistence, and the heroism within real-life careers.

Visually, the movie was extraordinary. The unimaginable vastness of space is rendered with breathtaking clarity, and pairs with intimate scenes of character development to show the connection between people and nature. Furthermore, the main character’s isolation is highlighted throughout the film, making every victory feel monumental for the audience.

The contrast that Project Hail Mary creates between the infinite and the personal gives the movie a unique emotional weight. “It was like a feel-good interstellar,“ said Abby Choi, a junior at Irvington High School.

Project Hail Mary is more than a science-fiction film – it is a celebration of the skills and mindset adopted by real-world problem solvers.
