Irvington Varsity Baseball: A Hot Start to the Season

By Owen Liu

Every spring, baseball takes the nation by storm, with over 471,000 high school boys gearing up to take the field. This year, the Irvington varsity baseball team is making its mark, dominating both the infield and outfield. With a 7–2 record as of April 19th, standout player Justin Corniel Perez (JCP) said, “We’re locked in for this season, and ready for more.”

The team owes its success to dominant defense, overwhelming offense, and dedicated coaching from Rocco Cipriano and Matt Arone.

In the infield, talent is spread across every position. Catcher Brian Kim (12) leads behind the plate, while the starting pitching rotation includes John Vito Salvatore (10), Jaxen Brewster (12), JCP (11), and Navy Minkoff (12). At second base, Lucas Constantine (10) and freshman Emmet Eson (9) split time, while third base is covered by JCP (11). At first base, John Vito Salvatore (10) anchors the position.

Pitching is one of the most essential aspects of baseball, often deciding the outcome of a game. Pitchers are expected to give maximum effort on every throw, producing strong and consistent performances. Taking a closer look at the rotation, standout performances from athletes like John Vito Salvatore and JCP catch the eye. Sophomore John Vito Salvatore has an impressive 0.583 ERA, allowing just 1 run and 4 hits through 12 innings pitched. Junior JCP has pitched 6 innings, giving up only 3 hits and 1 run, and currently maintains a 1.167 ERA.

Additionally, the outfield houses some impressive talent. Key contributors include Ben Epple (11), who commands center field, Connor Marron (12) in left field, and Patrick Pressman (9) holding it down in right. Together, the outfield brings speed, awareness, and strong defensive play, consistently shutting down opposing hits and supporting the team’s dominant infield performance.

Ted Williams, one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, once said, “Baseball is the only field of endeavor where a man can succeed three times out of ten and be considered a good performer.” In contrast, several players on the Irvington roster are batting over .400 this season. John Vito Salvatore, Brian Kim, Connor Marron, Ben Epple, and JCP all have batting averages of .400, showcasing the exceptional talent and offensive strength of these student-athletes. Specifically, JCP is hitting a remarkable .650 with 4 doubles and 3 triples, further contributing to the team’s explosive offense.

In an interview, rising freshman Emmet Eson and sophomore Lucas Constantine said, “We’ve been putting in the work every day, and everything’s starting to come together. Everyone is working hard together and we’re really excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us.”

With a combination of elite pitching, disciplined defense, and explosive offense, the Irvington varsity baseball team positions itself as a serious contender this spring. Backed by strong leadership and a unified mentality, the Bulldogs continue to build momentum with each game. This is a season that is shaping up to be one to remember.
