Pay Returned to TSA Workers

By Leila Schneider

On Friday, March 27, President Donald Trump signed an executive order resuming pay for TSA workers that had been working without pay for 44 days due to a partial government shutdown.

According to William Brangham from PBS News, “The Department of Homeland Security announced that most TSA employees received a first retroactive paycheck today that covered several weeks of unpaid work. But many workers say damage has already been done. Some are still calling out sick or struggling to catch up on bills, childcare, and missed payments after weeks without income.”

Although pay has been returned to TSA workers, the damage caused by the break in pay has not been so easily fixed. The 44 days that TSA workers weren’t making any income caused many financial issues that has led to many resignations, long and dysfunctional airport lines, and many workers that haven’t been properly reimbursed for the time they were unpaid.

Ultimately, this period has been extremely stressful for many workers who have been faced with the decision of how to approach this situation. These workers have themselves and their families to support, and it’s extremely unfair to TSA workers and travelers for this break in pay, especially because the return of pay hasn’t been sufficient in solving many of the problems that has resulted.
