Winter track is underway now and there is much buzz in the air. The runners, jumpers and throwers are very excited for the coming season and have sectional aspirations.

Junior Matthew Jacoby says he is very excited for the season.

“You gotta love track,” he said.

Both the sprinting and distance core is strong for the boys team. Senior Indy Minkoff leads the distance runners this winter season. His main goal for the winter is to “get right” coming off a long cross country season that ended with State medal but also a nagging cough.

The sprinters consist of several strong sectional contenders as well. Mason Canton and Tane Kim are striving for short distance success and a few records to break this year.

On the girls side, juniors Syian Sawian and Alex Lyashenko look to lead the sprinters to success, while distance runners senior Ana Bjorgvinsson, senior Sophia DeCecchis and junior Nicola Paul hope to build on a successful cross country season this winter. Paul and senior Hanna Reich will lead the shot put crew.

Although Irvington Winter Track has serious goals for sectional gold, the team is also about having fun, staying healthy, and trying new things. For example, Navy Minkoff, sophomore and brother of Indy, plans on trying high jump this winter.

Winter track kicks off with an outdoor meet on Dec 2 at the Big Chill Relays at Yorktown High School before heading indoors at Rockland Community College and the New York Armory for the season.
