Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) is a competition that is meant to engage high school students in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. High school seniors have the ability to compete for scholarships and acknowledgments by presenting original research to a group of judges and fellow high school students.
On January 28th, the IHS Science Research seniors attended JSHS. The competition took place at John Jay High School.
Five IHS Students won awards.
Meika Tomika won 1st place as a local speaker in the Neurology and Genetics IV category. Ryan Liu won 3rd place as a regional speaker in the Medicine and Health II category. Olivia Yin won 3rd place as a regional speaker in the Behavior I category. Canaan Sales-Spar won 4th place as a regional speaker in the Plant and Earth II category. Lastly, Taila Ruoff won 5th place as a regional speaker in the Physical Science category.
In addition to these awards Canaan Sales-Spar, Olivia Yin, and Ryan Liu qualified and will have the chance to compete at the Upstate NY JSHS. This competition will take place on March 8 and 9, and will be held at the University at Albany.
During an interview with Meika Tomita she shared that “the competition was exciting and I got to meet a lot of other science research students from other schools who were really excited about their research too.” Additionally she said “Even though I was extremely proud of the work I put into my project and presentation, I was not expecting to win so I was shocked but also excited when they called my name.”
Olivia Yin said “ I think the competition went well when I was there I was very nervous and we were all practicing together, but once I got there and I was presenting I felt confident because of all the practice we put in and it turned out well.” Additionally she shared that after she found out she won 3rd place as a regional speaker “ I felt very excited. It felt like a good reminder of the hard work that we had put in throughout the years for the research.”
