This afternoon, principal Ms. Juliet Gevargis-Mizimakoski announced to Irvington High School staff, students and families that she will be resigning from her position at the end of this school year.
In an email to the community, Ms. GM wrote, “Though I am grateful for and proud of our work together, after much thoughtful reflection and consideration, I have decided to step away from my position here in Irvington to support my family, reconnect with other passions and take the next steps in my career. I look forward to finishing the school year together and appreciate your understanding and support. Thank you again for welcoming me to the Bulldog Family.”
In a separate communication from the district, Irvington superintendent Dr. Kris Harrison acknowledged Ms. GM’s resignation and thanked her for “her compassion for children and commitment to supporting the needs of the entire school community” these past three years.
“The past few years have introduced countless challenges due to the pandemic; however, Juliet’s dedication has kept the IHS community on a positive trajectory and ensured that each student will be incredibly well prepared for their future,” wrote Dr. Harrison.
Dr. Harrison also expressed their dedication to find a new principal for the 2022-23 school year. He said that the search for a replacement will include, “forums for faculty and staff members, students, and parents to provide feedback to help develop a leadership profile that will be utilized during the interview process.”
He added, “I am confident that the District will be successful in its search to identify a leader who brings the skills, talent and compassion necessary to partner with our faculty and students, as well as the broader school community to continue the legacy of excellence at IHS.”
Ms. GM was hired in the summer of 2019, becoming the first female principal in Irvington High School’s history. She served as assistant principal at Tappan Zee High School for 11 years prior to her appointment. Prior to TZ high school, Ms. GM was an assistant principal and social studies teacher in The Bronx.
Gevargis-Mizimakoski stated in an email to the IHS community that she will be resigning so that she can dedicate her time to “support my family, reconnect with other passions and take the next steps in my career.”
Although this change in leadership seemed somewhat sudden and unanticipated among the IHS community, the District has already expressed their dedication to find a replacement principal for the 2022-23 school year. The administration also plans to facilitate forums for the community to provide feedback as a means to ensure a smooth transition for the hiring process of the future principal of IHS.
