Science Labs in COVID Times

By Amanda Rose

COVID-19 certainly disrupted our “normal” way of life.  Science labs are one of the things that were forced to do differently during the school year.

When participating in science labs high school students must now follow COVID-19 procedures to reduce the risk of COVID transmission.  These procedures include thoroughly disinfecting and sanitizing equipment and surfaces.  Additionally students may no longer share equipment and are forced to maintain social distance.

Are science lab students losing valuable learning opportunities due to COVID?

Sophomore Katelyn Jee said, “We did some labs that were good in education (last year), but they were not hands-on because the teacher did it due to COVID.”

Artemisa Baliag (another IHS student), believes that this year is better than last year.

“We are now having more interactions during the lab.” she said.

Many students agreed that online learning and COVID restrictions definitely impacted their learning.
