IHS welcomes the new Latin teacher, Ms. Lilah Katz, who is looking forward to spreading her passion for the language, culture, and history of Latin with her students. I had the opportunity to ask Ms. Katz some questions as a way to further welcome her to the IHS community. She expressed that it has been hard during a pandemic to create connections with her students, but she is looking forward to meeting them in person and having more genuine relations. Here are some other things we discussed to get to know her better:
Q: Where did you teach before and what has brought you to Irvington?
Ms. Katz: I taught at the Academy of the Holy Angels in New Jersey. I came to Irvington to be closer to where I live in Westchester.
Q: Why did you choose to teach Latin?
Ms. Katz: I chose to teach Latin because I love the language as well as its history and culture. I wanted to keep learning about Latin and share my knowledge with my students.
Q: Are you going to be running the Latin club this year?
Ms. Katz: I believe Mr. Silverman is in charge of the Latin club, and I will be more than happy to help out!
Q: Have you met Ms. Cella who is the former Latin teacher at IHS? If so, did she give you any advice?
Ms. Katz: Yes, I met Magistra Cella a couple of times. Her advice to me was that teaching during this time is not easy or normal, but Irvington is a wonderful community ready to provide help and support.
Q: How has your transition been difficult during a pandemic?
Ms. Katz: It is obviously difficult transitioning to a new school during a pandemic, but the administration, students, and faculty have been very welcoming and eager to assist with any questions I might have.
Q: Is there anything you remember from your own high school experience related to Latin?
Ms. Katz: I remember when I finally reached the Latin 4 level my senior year. On the first day of class each student was given a Latin shirt with the quote “Per Aspera ad Astra” — through difficulties to the stars. We were supposed to wear the shirt on days we had big Latin tests or exams to inspire and motivate us.
