Don’t worry, your “Friends” will still be there for you in 2019! Some hardcore fans of the classic sitcom were worried the show was going to be cut from Netflix in the new year, after Netflix broke the harrowing news on December 4th that the show would be removed on January 1st, 2019.
Many panicked fans rushed to their TV’s hoping to finish the show or rewatch their favorite episodes before it was too late. Others became outraged at Netflix and took to writing petitions and angry letters to Netflix’s staff and CEO’s. Either way- the news caused quite a stir. So what was the alleged reasoning for the sudden removal?
Netflix is reportedly paying $100 million to continue licensing Friends from its owner, Warner Media, through 2019. That’s a steep jump from the $30 million a year that Netflix used to pay for streaming rights, in a deal that was due to expire by the end of 2018. Luckily for you, Netflix is willing to cough up the cash in order to keep viewers happy.
The news did not take too kindly at IHS either, as many students were upset. Freshman Josie Dring exclaimed, “Friends is my favorite show and I was so upset that I wouldn’t be able to keep watching it. I am just happy it is here to stay!”
The proclaimed removal of the show did cause quite a commotion, but luckily it was only a scare. Friends is here to stay! Get ready for more Friday night binge watching and lots of laughs!
