The Irvington varsity soccer team has gotten off to a strong start this season, winning its first four games, and holding a 5-1-1 record. The team has also outscored its opponents 16 goals to one, with wins over Bronxville, Briarcliff, Blindbrook and Woodlands.
Irvington opened the season with a 7-0 win over Woodlands. The team followed that with a 2-0 victory over Blindbrook, 3-0 win over Briarcliff and a 2-0 victory against Bronxville, and in Bulldog fashion, an energetic win over rival Dobbs Ferry 2-1.
One reason for the team’s strong start has been the preparation that went into the season. Rather than only focusing on individual drills, the team has spent a lot of time practicing its tactics and overall system.
“We focused a lot on our tactics and our system and made sure we had a system where we all knew our role,” said Sophomore David Rus.
Knowing everyone’s role has helped the team play together and understand what is expected from each player. Rather than an individual playing solo, they work together with strong ball movement and excellent communication from all players.
Team chemistry has also been an important part of the team’s start. The players have been able to have fun together while still staying focused when it matters.
“The team chemistry has been great. We laugh, have fun and lock in when we have to, and we work so well together on the field,” said Hagai Frechter.
The team’s results so far have shown how well the players have worked together. Irvington has scored at least 2 goals in each of its first six games while also keeping its opponents off the scoreboard. Unfortunately, their first loss of the season to Pleasantville marked the end of the impressive two goal per game streak. A 7-0 win against Woodlands was the team’s highest scoring game of the season.
In their most exciting matchup, a strong student section and excellent passing led to a 2-1 win over Dobbs Ferry. Junior Hagai Fretchter scored a top bins banger to put them ahead mid-way through the 2nd half.
With a 5-1-1 record to begin the season, the team has built a strong foundation through consistent practice, a clear system and good chemistry between its players. The team will continue that start as the season progresses.
