Boar’s Head: Your Unexpected Killer?

Recently the brand “Boar’s Head” deli meat has been investigated after nine people died. According to the New York Post, there have been at least seven lawsuits against Boar’s Head for reasons of personal injuries, wrongful death, and deceptive marketing practices. Prior to this, 58 people in 18 different states ate spoiled meat that was produced by Boar’s Head. The meat that was consumed was reported to have mold, mildew, and insects on the meat.

The lawsuits that have been filed are charging Boar’s Head with anywhere between $25,000 to $5 million. In addition, Boar’s Head has been tied to a spread of listeria which is a certain type of bacteria that sickens people. 

At Irvington, the deli in the cafeteria uses Boar’s Head meat as well as other ingredients, but the company has issued recalls for tainted meat and states on their website that they have “implemented corrective actions in keeping with FSIS regulations.”

According to one worker at the deli, “While working here, I mean there has never been any issues with the meat here. The meat has always been fresh and healthy looking.”

Previously in the Irvington district, there have been food complaints but never with the Boar’s Head meat. So for now, the Boar’s Head meat at school seems safe to eat.
