The Cafeteria’s New Look

By Alice Besidski

The Irvington cafeteria has recently undergone many changes. Not only does it now house all new furniture, but the layout is much changed from what it was in previous years. Now, there are many different options of tables, from high tables to low tables, and even tables with outlets for students to charge their computers.

In order to make this important decision, Assistant Superintendent Carol Stein made sure to solicit student feedback. Over the course of multiple days last school year, she questioned students on everything from different heights for tables to different types of chairs.

“I had samples of tables and chairs. Students were able to try out different chairs, see which ones were most comfortable,” said Ms. Stein. It was these testing of the different samples that prompted purchase of the new chairs in the cafeteria, able to seat both a student and hold their backpack.

“The tables weren’t big enough to accommodate a large group,” she noted, which is what led to the addition of the larger, rectangular tables now on both sides of the cafeteria.

The new tables not only seat more students, they also make life easier for the custodians, as the new tables are easily movable and foldable. “Everything we do is staff and student focused,” remarked Ms. Stein.

Student opinions of the new layout reflect how much consideration Ms. Stein put into meeting their needs. “It’s nice to have a change in the environment and I think the new layout is better for social interaction” said Junior Ruby Fieser.
