Heatwaves, Rain Delays, and Reschedules: Weather’s Influence on Fall Sports Schedules

By Julia Welter

As the school year progresses, so does the fall sports season, and Mother Nature has proven herself to be quite the wildcard on the field. This season, athletes from various sports teams have had to adapt to the ever-changing weather conditions, from heatwaves to rainstorms to the occasional lighting and thunder delay. Teams are constantly checking weather forecasts, and coaches have had to reschedule many games and practices.

Irvington High School athletes have felt frustrated with the large number of games and practices that have been canceled, along with the wet and muddy surfaces they’ve had to play on. When asked about how the weather has impacted his varsity football season, sophomore Eldad Frechter said “It delayed our home opener game on Saturday, and we had to move the game to Tuesday which was a struggle having to play after school.”

Each sport has had its own issues with the weather. Griffin Handfield, a sophomore on boys varsity soccer, explained that he has had four games canceled due to rain and lightning. The varsity girls’ soccer team, varsity girls’ tennis team, and the cross country team have also needed to deal with games being canceled and practices being moved indoors.

Despite these weather-related challenges, the spirit of fall sports prevailed. Athletes, coaches, and fans showed resilience and adaptability, finding ways to make the most of the situation. Teams worked on strategies to lessen the effects of the weather, and fans turned up to support their favorite teams.
