Last weekend, the IHS Drama Club presented their performance of Once Upon a Mattress, this year’s spring musical. The play was loosely based on the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, being a more comedic and lighthearted take on the original.
The performance itself from the cast and crew was great. Everyone clearly knew their lines, they all projected well, and they portrayed their characters in a way that made it engaging for those in the audience. The musical numbers were well-choreographed, and the music from the pit orchestra was really solid as well. The orchestra kept in time nicely without missing a beat and the show as a whole flowed quite smoothly.
Any criticism I have towards the performance was not the fault of anyone involved. Namely, there were a small number of actors whose microphones either cut out or did not work properly at all. This made them a bit harder to hear and did detract from the immersiveness of the performance slightly. However, the actors in question usually found workarounds, such as staying close to someone whose microphone was working or projecting their voice loud enough that the lack of a microphone did not matter. As such, this minor problem did not detract from the show all that much.
Overall, this performance was very solid. The IHS students and staff who put in all those hours into the performance did a great job, and this was definitely a really fun show to watch.
