New Classroom Keycards Introduced to the High School

By Stuart Graeber

On Wednesday, March 1st, students noticed new door-locking mechanisms have been installed on a number of classrooms on the second floor of the high school. Teacher identification cards now work as key cards to unlock and lock those classroom doors, and the plan is to replace on locking doors with these new locking mechanisms.

The initiative is intended to improve security in the high school, particularly during lock down procedures. The new locks have also been installed on the entry doors at the new staff entrance, next to the security desk entrance where students and visitors are buzzed in and out of the school.

Teachers in the English and World Language departments that make up most of the classrooms on the second floor were adjusting to the new entry procedures.

English teacher Mr. Williams thinks that the doors do have the potential to be an effective security measure.

“A central location that can lock and unlock all doors is a good thing,” said English teacher Mr. Williams. “One critique I have, however, is that there is no way to lock the doors from the inside, so if I need to lock the door quickly I still need to go out into the hallway. This was an issue with the key locks as well.”
