The Irvington community was notified via email on Wednesday, March 24, that assistant principal Mr. Matthew Samuelson would be leaving Irvington to become principal of Garden City Middle School in Long Island, effective July 1.
“It has long been my goal to work on the middle level and Garden City is a community very close to my home,” said Mr. Samuelson. “I am excited for this shift and the opportunity to be part of a team.”
He recognized that the move away from Irvington will be tough, however.
“I have loved every moment of my time in Irvington and the people I have met here and the relationships I have built with students, teachers, and families,” he said.
“I’m most grateful for the learning I have done here. I have been tremendously supported by colleagues and teachers with whom I work. I’ll be a bulldog for life and will absolutely be cheering for our students, whether it be in the classrooms, on the fields, the plays, the art galleries, as long as I live. Love the bulldogs.”
Mr. Samuelson was appointed assistant principal for Irvington High School in 2016. Prior to IHS, Mr. Samuelson taught English at New Rochelle High School. He also worked as a middle school ELA teacher.
“As you can imagine, this news is bittersweet as Matt has been a strong, personable leader in the High School over the past five years,” Superintendent Dr. Kris Harrison wrote in an email announcing the departure.
“Each and every day, he has been a student-centered leader who led with passion and utilized his considerable talent to support our faculty and staff, as well as the academic success of our students. The impact of Matt’s skill, knowledge and partnership has been felt District-wide and he will surely be missed.”
